Chapter Ten

My pulse races like a hummingbird, throbbing in my temples as I read the text message a second time. It’s only eight simple words - but what they mean could fill an entire ocean with feeling.

Midori wants me in her bedroom. She wants me to bring the package.

I glance at the cardboard box in my hand as I tuck the phone away. What the hell is this thing? I want to know, but I’m also a little worried to find out. My finger toys with the tape holding the top of the box closed, digging a nail beneath it, but after a few seconds I think better of it and tuck the thing under my arm. Let Midori see I’ve had the self-control not to rip it open. Maybe it’ll remind her that I’m still capable of resisting temptation.

I’m not stupid. I know what’s going to happen if I go up there. We’re going to tear each other’s clothes and fuck like...well, like cats in heat. I can see Midori now, stretched across her bed in that wispy little nightgown with the biggest smile on her face.

But there’s no way out of it. I have a package, and Midori needs me to give it to her. In more ways than one. The part of my brain capable of coming up with reasons why this is a bad idea has left the building. My hands shake gently as I carry the package upstairs, moving past the dark squares of Yuna and Erika’s rooms. Midori told me she checked on them, and I believe her. There’s no sound coming from either bedroom in any case, so they’re probably asleep.

A low purr reaches my ears as I approach the door to Midori’s bedroom. “Enter,” the catgirl growls, her voice filled with gusto. I pause at the threshold for a moment, marshalling every bit of self-control I possess. This is going to be tough.

The only light in the room comes from a dozen or so candles, which she’s lit and placed on what looks like every available surface.
